What is the hostility in question per se and how does the city exemplify survival in hostility?
20 JuinThe town is subject to polar and sub-polar climactic conditions. The month January averages a negative 30 degree centigrade with daytime lowest readings as low as -51 C. However it’s also true that Yellowknife is able to enjoy 100 frost free days due to its proximity to Great Slave Lake, and thanks to its position in a very high almost polar latitudes there is a considerable length difference between the the duration of days and nights. Yellowknife is able to merely enjoy only 5 hours of sunlight in December however this figure goes up to 20 hours in June.
These violent shifts in the amounts of sunlight presence also cause metabolic imbalances in humans. It would be fair to perhaps call all that human effort wasted to adapt to these changes as « loss of labour and valuable life time ».
On the other hand due to the presence of vast diamond reserves and the ever increasing mining initiative, there is a population increase even in Yellowstone despite its extremely hostile natural environment.
Synthesis:
We have studied « attraction centers » which were once the extremely « hostile territories ». It is either the natural or the man made factors contributing to the creation and upkeep of this attraction. Las Vegas is an example of highly artificial attraction center based on gambling, prostitution and entertainment. It’s the inherent hostility of the environment which in fact produced all this artificial human innovation and transformation without which it wouldn’t have been possible to flourish in a sustainable way.
In the case of Yellowknife the presence of natural wealth attracting humans to flock there is at the base of this atypical urbanization. The architecture produced within these extreme conditions is also very much inline with the hostilities, extremities inherent in these regions. Thus only thru a thorough understanding of the hostile nature of the territory one can develop a working understanding of the development trends within these cities.
An extreme example : YELLOWKNIFE
20 JuinYellowknife is a city founded in Canada’s Northwestern Territories, on a delta formed by the Yellowknife river on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake. Many of the water bodies are named after the Yellowknife tribe.
Discovery of the Mining Fields
It wouldn’t be wrong to say Yellowknife indeed wasn’t inhabited before. First steps were taken in Yellowknife with the local Indian tribes moving towards the East shore of the Yellowknife Bay. Very much like in Las Vegas the precise location of fresh water determined the inhabitation area. It’s the the diamond, mining surveyors coming later in 1930s to the area we owe the real urbanization of Yellowknife. Yet this in retrospect is the second birth, emergence of Yellowknife with the first one being due to discovery of gold by B.A.Blakeney in late 19th century. And this rebirth is materialized with the commencement of production in September 5th, 1938 of the Mining Company.

Yellowknife’s population has already reached 1000 and there were already 5 gold mines in the area back then.
In 50s and 60s the extent of Gold Mining has grew and it can be said that this era indeed is the best one in town’s history. This financial and population growth witnessed between 1939 and 1953 in this shining star of the Northwest Territories made it clear the need for a more hierarchical governmental establishment there.

Already in 1953 Yellowknife with its local municipality and municipal parliament has gone beyond being a simple small town. Quite similar to the phenomenon observed in the article « Las Vegas irradiate » also takes place in Yellowknife.
Around 1973 Soviet’s nuclear powered Kozmoz 954 satellite has crashed close to the town. There weren’t any casualties yet a disturbing radioactive contamination enough to lock in the inhabitants already who could enjoy very little natural sunlight in winter months.
But the real bomb to fall upon the city wasn’t the nuke but rather the discovery of Diamond
In 1991 300 kilometers to the north of the city Diamond was discovered. Today primarily Yellowknife is a buerocratic town very much in the service of the diamond mines. However in 1999 the separation of Nunavut from Northwest Territories and the sharp drop in gold prices forced the last gold mine to also shot down its operations in 2004.

It was this late discovery of diamond and the prospective mining operations thereof enabling the town to once again regain the strong economic vibrance and strength it once had.
The other face of the town // Northern Lights
Another aspect and consequence of the major hostility this town suffers from namely its polar position is the presence of the Northern Lights.
Tourism is a major source of income for Northwestern Territories and it’s one of the main reasons why so many people visit also the town of Yellowknife. While most visitors are interested in sampling a sub polar life style and discovering the traditional Innui lifestyle yet it’s the Japanese tourists interested in seeing Aurora Borealis.
